Air Conditioning Facts
Many homeowners have central air conditioning units attached to their furnaces. Central air conditioners and the fans on your furnace work together to circulate cool air throughout your home. Cleaning the ducts and filter of your furnace increases both the life and efficiency of your air conditioning unit. However, air conditioning units require some maintenance independent from furnace upkeep.

The following three critical tips extend the life of your air conditioner and improve the quality of air in your home:

1. Place your air conditioning unit on the north side of your home or build a screen to provide shade. A shaded unit cools your home faster and reduces your electric bills due to a shorter running time. Your air conditioner should last between fifteen and twenty years with proper upkeep.
2. Keep debris, such as leaves, twigs and grass clippings, away from your outdoor air conditioning unit. Cover your unit during the winter months. You may purchase a cover or simply use a wood board.
3. Hire Changing Season's A/C & Electrical Services annually to check your air conditioning unit, although newer units and maintained units may need to be checked less frequently. Many homeowners opt to have their furnace and air conditioning unit checked at the same time. During an inspection, the professionals at Changing Season's A/C & Electrical Services check voltage levels, lubricate moving parts and add Freon if needed. (Freon is a potentially dangerous substance that can only be handled by licensed professionals.)

Heating Facts
Humidifier and Air Purifier
Furnaces enable your home to breathe. A network of ducts spreads from your furnace to heat and refresh the air in your home. Professionals recommend attaching a humidifier and air purification system to your furnace to keep your air moist and clean. Select a humidifying system that drains instantly to avoid bacteria build-up. Humidifiers and air purifiers are particularly helpful for those with allergies.

The following three critical tips extend the life of your air conditioner and improve the quality of air in your home:

1. Change the filter every month. Permanent filters should be thoroughly washed. Filters are generally located where the cool air return reaches the body of; the furnace.
2. Clean the ducts. Hire a professional to unclog your ducts of dirt and dust. Those with older homes, pets or allergies may need to clean their ducts more frequently than others.
3. Hire a professional annually to check your furnace. During the inspection, professionals lubricate moving parts, check temperature gauges and clean the filter if needed.

Depending on the make and model, your furnace should last between twenty and thirty years.
